Jeghers Medical Index

What is the Jeghers Medical Index?

The Jeghers Medical Index is a database of medical literature that spans from the late 1800s to the late 1990s, and it was personally selected and collected by Harold J. Jeghers, M.D., a noted 20th century American physician. Access this historical medical journal article collection by visiting the Search Index.

Who was Dr. Jeghers?

Dr. Jeghers helped shape the philosophy of medical education used today. He is best known for his contribution to the beginning of the understanding of Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome. This was made possible through his medical journal articles collection and tireless indexing.

What we do today in medicine is deeply rooted in our past. Harold J. Jeghers’ idea of collecting, organizing, and applying information from medical journal articles to patient care has become part of the current practice of medicine.

Dr. Jeghers believed that physicians can improve the quality of medicine through self-directed medical education and lifelong learning. He held this tenet decades before state medical licensing required continuing medical education.

How was the Jeghers Medical Index created?

Jeghers Medical Index comprises almost 1 million medical journal articles. The vast majority of which were paper, and from 2012–2015, they were converted to archival PDFs, incorporated into a database, PubMed metadata was added and the collection is searchable in a variety of ways.
